OPERATING SYSTEMS

Windows 2000 this is the operating system that we recommend, it is much more stable than any of its predessors, is compatable with the widest range of hardware (both old & new). It is a very secure system is it is properly maintained and the NTFS file system is used. If you are using this operating system you should run windows update.

Windows Me this us an updated and dressed up version of windows 98 with a little added functuality. You wouldn??™t want to upgrade to this operating system. If you already have this system you don??™t need to upgrade unless you??™re unhappy with it??™s instabillity or lack of security..

Windows 98 an upgraded and improved version of Win95, has limited support from Microsoft. If you are using this operating system you should run windows update. You should also seriously consider upgrading to Windows 2000

Windows 95 this was a breakthru operating system in it??™s day, but it??™s day is long gone. If you are running win95 you should upgrade to Windows 2000. If you are thinking of upgrading your hardware then you will have to upgrade, because drivers for your new hardware won??™t be available.

Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server very stable and reliable operating system, may be necessary to upgrade to be compatible with some later hardware and software.

Windows XP, Home & Pro the latest of the Windows series, built on NT technology.

The question of whether or not Microsoft still supports one of their programs and for how long is very complicated, check here for the latest info. What this means to the average user is very little, basically it means that they will no longer develope service packs and phone support will cost a lot more or not be available at all. Since hardware drivers are normally developed by the hardware manufacturers, they will continue to do so as long as there is adequate demand.
